It comes to no surprise that the dreaded Concordia parent line is happening again where parents have been queuing up since Wednesday night to stand in line for 48hours with hopes of getting their toddler into one of the most coveted Pre-K 3 abbot school programs JC offers. So much so that one parent (identification unknown) has taken it to extra lengths of securing the first place position by hiring a professional "Line Holder" business from the city! I have mixed feelings about this seeing as I thought it was completely absurd that parents wait in line for over two days just to get their kids into this school, however last year, as mush as I was complaining, I was right there on the sidewalk as well with my sleeping bag trying to ensure my daughter had a spot too ( see original post below). Did I mention this school is only for 1yr, that's it! When I pulled into the parking lot yesterday to pick my daughter up from school and noticed this very fashionable, young man in a clear cellophane one man tent, the first thought that came to mind was, whose parent is he? Let me be clear, I am not saying or rather trying to imply that parents can't be fashionable and or have a cool/edgy look, however something instinctual made me zero in on this individual. Could have been because he was the first person in line, most likely it was the brown fringed moccasin booties that I was attracted to, either way, I noticed him immediately. So when the information was passed to me that the first person in line not only wasn't a parent, but a professional that works in shifts, I couldn't believe it!


I had to ask myself, am I mad because I didn't think of the idea when it was my turn last year and I could have saved myself two days of uncomfortable nights sleeping on the streets of JC? Alternating with my husband going back and forth to our home to take showers, going in shifts ourselves, etc...
Or am I mad because I think its a bit unfair that these parents or parent (whomever they are) are actually paying people to do the "work" for them, with a NY based business no doubt. Maybe I wouldn't feel some type of way about it if at least it was a JC based business, putting money back into the community. Either way it definitely invokes a multitude of feelings in me and apparently other fellow parents who children currently attend the school and "paid" their due diligence last year and parents whose children don't even attend the school, but feel a way as well. What are your thoughts? I am curious to know.....

So this is how my day went today....up at 6:00am getting ready to go back and stand in a line that I had been waiting in since Friday morning for registration for a school that opened Saturday morning at 8:00am. Not a school for me, however you ask, "what were you waiting for? it must be for something worthy and amazing" I was waiting along with other parents, (some since Thursday morning at 11:00am when the first parent stood in line)  to make sure they had a space or rather their child had a space out of the 90 slots available for a Pre-K 3 high scope curriculum educational program provided by the state. Yes you can count me and my husband in with the rest of these determined (and some crazy) parents willing to sleep out on the streets for their child's education. Was it worthy and amazing? Although the system to get your child in is a bit ridiculous, flawed and definitely needs some change, however for an amazing foundation of education......it was priceless.
