Mama Care Monday: Nipple Shield
9:11:00 AMThere are many advantages to breastfeeding, one being that it is way less expensive than formula (that stuff is pricey!) And although, breastfeeding is a key bonding time for mama and baby, it's not always that easy for some women to do. A good percentage of first time moms have extreme difficulty in the first few weeks of babies life trying to nurse due to inverted or recessed nipples, issues with proper latching, physical restriction of baby, physical issues with mom, the list goes on and on. However, whatever the reason may be, not being able to feed your baby can stress a lot of moms out, causing or triggering an overwhelming amount of emotions than can lead to PPD. It is important to always keep in mind that just as important as it is to care for and provide proper nutrition for baby, moms need to do the same for themselves. Like I always say, if mama is not ok, baby isn't ok either or isn't getting enough to sustain. When breastfeeding, a woman needs to consume almost double her amount of calories so that she can provide nutrition to the baby and still restore and replenish for herself.
I discovered recently through a client of mine, these convenient Medela brand clear nipple shields for breastfeeding.
A nipple shield is a flexible silicone nipple that is worn over the mom’s nipple during a feeding. Nipple shields should, in general, be considered a short-term solution and should be used under the guidance of a lactation consultant. Often, nipple shields are recommended within the first few days of birth. These shields are really great for new moms who experience difficulty while breastfeeding due to inverted or recessed nipples, this will help to draw them out and make sure baby is getting the adequate intake.
Also, mama needs to make sure she has an adequate postpartum diet and eating a high fiber, high protein, and "good" saturated fat foods for recovery. If there is an issue with mom such as low blood sugar and mama is feeling light headed, dizzy, etc.... handle the situation by getting a proper combination of foods and don't hesitate to integrate similac or formula to substitute while mama gets herself together. This way the baby is still getting some form of food and nutrition, while mama is sorting her situation out.
If an issue persists, then seek medical attention. It is extremely important that mama is feeling ok and has the right amount of intake so that she can continue to produce a quality milk supply. Remember mamas, take care of yourself so that you can continue to take care of others.......until next Monday!
